Types of Tagalog Sentences

1. Simple sentence

A simple sentence only requires "One (1 ) Subject and 1 Predicate".

Halimbawa:
Si Leslie ay masayang sumasayaw.
Si Rejen ay masayahin.
Sina Leslie at Lester ay magkapatid.
Si Rhena ay maganda at mabait.

SubjectPredicate
Si Leslieaymasayang sumasayaw
Si Rejenaymasayahin.
Sina Leslie at Lesteraymagkapatid
Si Rhenaaymaganda at mabait.

2. Compound Sentence

A compound sentence is at least Two (2) Subject and 2 Predicate or 2 simple sentences

Two (2) Subject and two (2) Predicate
Pumunta ako sa Isabela, at natuwa ako ng sobra.
Kumanta si Ruthie, at sumayaw si Leslie.

SubjectPredicate
AkoPumunta sa Isabela
Akonatuwa ng sobra
Si Ruthiekumanta
Si Lesliesumayaw

Two Types of Tagalog Sentence Formats

1.) Direct Format
-Subject comes first before a predicate
Subject (ay) Predicate

Halimbawa:
Si Ruth ay masayahing bata.
Ang aso ay mataba.

SubjectPredicate
Si Ruthaymasayahing bata
Ang asoaymataba.

2.) Indirect Format
- Predicate comes first before the subject
- Usual Format of Filipinos
- "ay" is omitted

Halimbawa:
Masayahing bata si Ruth.
Mataba ang aso.

PredicateSubject
Masayahing batasi Ruth
Matabaang aso
Note: "ay" was omitted during the transition process

Understanding the sentence:

1.) Identify the subject and the predicate.
2.) Translate the sentence starting from the subject then translate the predicate.

Halimbawa:
1. Masaya ang aso.
Subject: Ang aso
English: The dog
Predicate: masaya
English: happy
The dog is happy.

2. Ang aso ay masaya.
Subject: Ang aso
English: The dog
Predicate: masaya
English: happy
The dog is happy.
